Discover the beauty, philosophy, and discipline of Kintsugi through an authentic apprenticeship program in northern Shiga.

Created in collaboration with Soweido, this immersive program introduces guests to the traditional Japanese art of repairing ceramics with lacquer and gold while embracing the beauty of imperfection, time, and renewal.

Held inside a working Kintsugi studio, the experience offers a rare opportunity to step into an authentic craftsman’s workshop and observe the environment where traditional techniques are practiced and preserved. Guided by a craftsman with nearly four decades of experience, participants enjoy meaningful hands-on learning that goes beyond technique to explore the cultural values and spirit behind Kintsugi.

Programs are available for different levels of interest, from a beginner-friendly 2-day / 1-night cultural retreat to deeper 7-day, 10-day, and 30-day apprenticeship courses. Guests can choose a light introduction or a more immersive learning experience depending on their schedule, interests, and desired level of engagement.

The journey includes a stay at Guesthouse Ko-Rai-Gen, a private temple stay beside a historic Buddhist temple near Lake Biwa. Guests may also join optional morning temple experiences and enjoy cultural exchange with the resident priest.

Supported in English, Spanish, and Japanese by a licensed interpreter-guide, this program offers a welcoming and deeply personal encounter with Japanese craftsmanship, temple culture, and slow travel.
