History & Culture in Winter
Nagahama Hachimangu Shrine
Nagahama Hachimangu Shrine boasts a history of more than a thousand years, enshrining the main god of Nagahama City and having been protected by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the feudal lord of Nagahama Castle.
Omi Jingu Shrine
Omi Jingu Shrine is a registered Cultural Property, and a representative example of the Showa period (1926 – 1989) shrine construction known as Omi construction or Showa construction.
Mii-dera Temple New Year’s Bells
The “Evening bell at Mii-dera Temple” is famous for being one of the Three Bells of Japan, and also as one of The Eight Views of Omi.
Sakamoto Castle Ruins
Today there is almost nothing to see of the remains of Sakamoto Castle, with just a monument standing solemnly, alone.
Omi Merchant Cityscape (Shinmachi Street)
The old townscape is especially well preserved in the vicinity of the Shinmachi area, and is a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
Ojoyasuwake Yashiki
This is the house of the Suwa family, which in early modern times was the the ojoya (“village headman”).
