The Lake Biwa Canal was created during the Meiji period (1868-1912) for the purposes of irrigation, transportation, power generation and the supply of drinking water to Kyoto from Lake Biwa.

The large and extremely beautiful gardens that spread to the south of Enmanin-shinden Temple are a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site, and a visit is especially recommended during the changing of the leaves in fall.

The Ukimido, the “floating temple hall” at Mangetsuji Temple, is famous for being featured in one of the Eight Views of Omi, “wild geese returning home at Katata.

The wide grounds of the Fisheries Center includes a number of ponds, providing plenty of opportunities to get close to the water and the fish swimming in it.
